Churchill Downs: Update on Growth & Expansion (1 AIA Credit)
Presented  by Pete Berdovich, Director of Construction, Churchill Downs

The Courier Journal reported on April 10, 2019 that Oak Grove Racing and Gaming is breaking ground as another investment by a partnership of Churchill Downs and Keeneland providing yet more options in horse racing and gaming in Kentucky.  The Courier Journal said that this venue is "an estimated cost of $150 million adjacent to Fort Campbell, [and] will be built in two phases. The first phase, which is expected to be completed in time for a 12-day October meet already approved by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), will include a harness race track, stable facilities and a paddock. The second phase, which will feature a grandstand, an amphitheater, a 128-room hotel and gaming facilities for 1,500 historical racing machines, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020."

This news is on the heals of growth and expansion we have seen recently in the Louisville area at the Churchill Downs Racetrack and Derby City Gaming.  Mr. Berdovich has agreed to take time out of his demanding schedule to talk to our group about their growth and expansion.  The AIA Central Kentucky Chapter is invited to join CSI Louisville in this in-depth first-hand look at what it takes to coordinate such design and construction effort at such fast pace.
The objectives of this course will be as follows:
1. Attendees to learn about the existing and upcoming projects and how and what decisions have been made that impact these investments.
2. Attendees will learn about the needs and challenges in the horse industry and how Churchill has been able to respond to these.
3. Attendees will gain knowledge on how legislation changes have affected the horse industry, and specifically Churchill Downs.
4. Attendees will learn about specific features that are must have in existing and new race track, stables, paddock, grandstand and gaming facilities.
